Case Study

XCP

Rapid onboarding of acquired add-ons to support a buy-and-build strategy at xxllnc.

Staff+ EngineeringEngineering Management

Overview

The xxllnc group comprises multiple software development companies serving Dutch government agencies. In 2019, xxllnc acquired zaaksysteem.nl, previously migrated to AWS by Evil8 and rebranded as xxllnc zaken. The group has since expanded with various government-focused firms, each operating with different IT infrastructures and cloud maturity levels.

The Challenge

Development teams faced infrastructural obstacles including:

  • Monitoring gaps
  • Limited self-service capabilities
  • Load balancing issues
  • Certificate management complexities
  • Scaling limitations
  • Compliance requirements specific to government operations

The Solution

The xxllnc Cloud Platform (XCP) was designed as an AWS landing zone and a multi-tenant, self-service Kubernetes (EKS) platform. The system enables straightforward application integration without expanding the platform team's workload.

XCP addresses monitoring, developer self-service, load balancing, certificate management, auto-scaling, auto-recovery, high-availability, and government security compliance requirements.

The platform team facilitates adoption through onboarding guidance, training, and peer-sharing, creating structured "paved roads" for rapid deployment.

The Results

  • Cost savings of 70% on IT infrastructure for individual teams
  • Reduced time-to-production for new acquisitions from months to weeks
  • Standardised security and compliance controls across all workloads
  • Enabled autonomous team delivery with guardrails
