Increasing reliability and empowering product teams while lowering cost at Ahold Delhaize.
Overview
Evil8 collaborated with Ahold Delhaize to create an observability platform for their TechNL IT organisation. This platform serves Albert Heijn, Etos, and Gall&Gall, supporting over 1,500 engineers within the 150-person Engineering Enablement Platform department.
Evil8 deployed two interim positions: Engineering Manager and Staff Engineer. The focus centred on platform bootstrapping, facilitating migrations, and establishing a sustainable team structure.
The Challenge
The initiative tackled several organisational pain points:
- Immature observability practices and tools
- Excessive costs from multiple licenses and infrastructure expenses
- Fragmented tooling ecosystem including Nagios, Elastic, ADX, Prometheus, Dynatrace, and others
- Lack of standardisation and shared knowledge across teams
The Solution
The platform utilises the LGTM stack (Loki, Grafana, Tempo, Mimir) with Prometheus integration. Key features include:
- Multi-tenant architecture
- Standardised APIs supporting Grafana, Prometheus, OpenTelemetry, and Syslog
- Integrated IAM authentication
- As-a-service design model enabling independent team usage
- Comprehensive documentation and support
The Results
- MVP delivery within three months
- 80% team adoption within one year
- Enabled other teams to develop solutions using the platform
- Significant reduction in incidents and mean time to recovery
